Getting a Job is Hard Graft

By Stephen Kaye Well, I haven’t been in this situation for some years now, thankfully, but it’s good to reflect on old writings, and this is still true today, as it was then … Probably the hardest part of being unemployed is not knowing when things are going to change for the better. That illusory hope for the future which encourages: “Only a little longer to go and I can get a raise, promotion or big commission deal - is simply not there. So as the bills creep up, (because however you try to work it, you never have quite enough to go ’round), and as the things you can’t have or just really don’t need become an ever-increasing weight on that other list (things you are going to pay for, sort out and get, once you have a job), you find that little by little your life is becoming smaller and smaller, and that you’re in quite a trap. BENEFITS You can’t take just any job, because once you are back in work you lose whatever small relief you’ve been able to obtain from rates and other bills and once again these and the mortgage will be all yours to pay in full from your salary package. If you were in a well-paid position before, the chances are that your outgoings are still potentially high, and that outweighs the merits of taking just any job. So you need a position with a salary similar to your previous earnings. Or more - because now you have those other unemployment benefits called debts. “Getting a job is a job in itself”, say the Employment Service. It is indeed. Probably the hardest job of all because there are no guarantees no bonuses for effort, no overtime, and certainly no pay cheque at the end of the month. RESPONSES You want to see my job search file. You really do. I went through it a few days ago and found that this year I have written over 90 letters, filled in 26 application forms, made over 95 telephone calls chasing up hopeful chances and attended 19 interviews. To - date I have received an abundant supply of straight-off-the-floppy-disc form letters which in so many words say - “Thanks, but no thanks”. There’s a word-processing programme which all personnel officers in the world use to reply to interviewees who didn’t get the job. It reads: “Thank you very much … unfortunately … candidate quality very high … difficult decision … keep your details on file …” I have a suggestion for Personnel Officers: Why not have a form letter to send out to unsuccessful applicants which simply says - “Thanks, but no thanks!” I’d understand that far better than the patronising nonsense which spasmodically hits my postbox. (That is, where any response at all is forthcoming!) OPTIONS Options? Yes, there are options. Self - employment, working from home, winning the lottery, retrain … That’s a good one! Retrain! say the Employment Service, but it’s not quite so simple. For instance, how do you gain enough income in a new starting-at-the-bottom career to pay all your bills for the time it will take you to become as proficient as you were in your last field? Working from home is another option, so is self-employment, but the same question applies. FACTS The facts as I see them are simple and they are threefold: 1: There are far more people than there are jobs. 2: The better you are at your job, the lower your chances of redundancy. 3: The age of full employment until retirement age is over. 4: If you spend all your benefits on scratch cards you’ll be up the creek. Unemployment can change your life, anyone without a job will second that, but I’d like mine changed a little more right now, in the direction of some good hard cash! Sometimes I feel as if I’m on the wrong planet. This is Alpha Centauri, isn’t it? Tanning The Natural Way

By Caryl B. Grecia This is a call to everybody. Save your skin, now before its too late! Having a tan makes you look more healthy and gorgeous. But how do you do it without bad consequences? There are a lot of people who would like to have golden brown skin. It is not a new sight when people go to the beach to lie almost naked under the sun just to have an equal tan. But, it is not so safe to do just that because of the super harmful UV rays. Instead of getting only a perfectly golden skin, one might suffer a serious case of skin cancer later, too. There are plenty of options in tanning today. More modern ways are undergoing medical treatment to acquire a sun-less tan. However, there are still some modern techniques that use radiation powered machines to tan the skin. And radiation is also bad to the health. There are more techniques that could give a person a perfect tan. But most of them cost so much because they are highly specialized techniques and reduces (or even eliminates) usage of radiation or UV rays. But to an average person who desires to have a golden skin, it would not be very practical to pay so much to have the desired healthy golden skin. There are ways to achieve a perfect tan without exposing yourself to the sun and spending so much on skin clinics. There are ready-to-use products that are safe to use and are inexpensive compared to the services offered in skin clinics. Here are some tips for a safe, sunless and costless tanning right in your homes. Remember that before applying those sunless tanners, the body must first be thoroughly cleaned and exfoliated by using loofah or soft cloth to wash off dust and dead skin cells. This way, even tan will surely be achieved. Use moderate amount on knees, elbows and other parts with thick, dry skin, as they will appear darker. Use a sponge paintbrush, about two to three inches in size, in applying tanner on the back. When applying in the face, avoid spreading in and around the eyes. After application, immediately wash hands thoroughly with soap and water. Use a make-up wedge when applying at the backs of your hands in smooth even strokes as well as on your feet and between the toes. Apply the tanner using both horizontal and vertical strokes or circular motion. When using a spray tanner, avoid saturating it. Instead, spray and blend quickly and thoroughly over one body part then do the same to the rest of the body. After making sure the tanner is applied evenly, wait for about one hour before applying any moisturizer or foundation or going swimming/bathing. Also, avoid contact with carpets, fabrics, clothing, and furniture. If necessary, and for a deeper tan, repeat process. A very important reminder for you: Stay away from the sun from 10:00 in the morning to 3:00 in the afternoon. That is when the sun is most harmful. Remember that wanting a beautiful skin is not merely an act of vanity. Taking care of your skin is also taking care of your health. Protecting it from the sun is the most important gift you could give your skin. Have a beautiful and safe tan just right in your home without spending so much. Hugs - Improve Health, Increase Happiness and End Conflict With Hugs

By Deborah D Miller FREE HUGS. What image comes to mind when you read this phrase? What would you do if someone approached you with a sign saying Free Hugs? Imagine what it would be like to give and get free hugs. What effects would these hugs have on you and others? Could hugs be used to improve relationships? Improve health? Heal emotional wounds? Change politics? Create compassion and understanding? Heres my story about free hugs and their affects. The Free Hugs video (You can find it on www.youtube.com) inspired a group of 20 people in Oaxaca, Mexico, (where I live) to go out and give free hugs. We werent affiliated with any social, political or religious group. We were going out to give free hugs because we liked the video, because the people in Oaxaca during the political conflict that existed in 2006 needed a hug, and because it resonated with something deep inside of us. We gathered together with our signs Free Hugs or Ill give you a hug, then walked down the main pedestrian walkway in Oaxaca City to the Zocalo (Central Square). At first I felt strange just like the looks people gave me when they saw my sign. Who was I to be giving them a hug? How would they react? I gave hugs to anyone I encountered: kids, parents, couples, singles, young and old walking down the street, workers in shops, street vendors, teachers, politicians and more. To give hugs to complete strangers is a unique sensation. There is an awkwardness and distrust that appears at first, and then shifts as the hug transpires. Yet, each hug was special. Some people would smile and walk by. Some people wanted a hug but were too afraid to receive one. Others would hesitate then shyly or uncertainly receive a hug if I went up to them. Some hugs were tentative, shy and uncomfortable, others were light and free. A few people came to me with arms outstretched. One woman called me over asking for hugs for her and her friends. Some even gave a kiss on the check. Many hugs were deep, intense, enveloping and loving. Some hugs were filling needs for touch, for compassion, for understanding. Others were recharging depleted energy and receiving acceptance to those feeling beaten down or misunderstood. Other hugs were for fun. Looks of gratitude came, smiles, tenderness, softening and joy. A connection formed as we touched. Every person, whether receiving a hug or only observing, smiled. This impressed me. What a transformation! I was changed in that that 2 hour period I gave hugs. I received hugs, not only gave them. I too was being touched physically, mentally and emotionally. I could feel my heart opening. I asked myself when the last time I received hugs for two hours was. I couldnt remember one time. I was being touched and cherished during those hours of hugging as I was touching and cherishing others. I felt recharged, energized and happy. I made heart contact with people. This experience was recorded in the memories of the inhabitants of Oaxaca in photos in the newspapers, conversations on the radio and personal conversations by those who gave and received hugs, and those who only heard about it. This touching experience (no pun intended) is a wonderful sign of the value of hugging. People were impressed and delighted with the positive effect it had. It is a beautiful experience to give hugs to total strangers. It reminded me that we are ONE, all part of the family called humanity. Hugging can be very healing. It is different than other energetic healing modalities because hugging is something that anyone can see, feel and experience. I love energy work, but many people havent grasped how energy work based on spirituality plays out in the physical world. Hugs bring the spiritual and physical worlds together in a delightful fashion. These hugs were energy that became tangible. They made spirituality tangible. I highly recommend it. What could we heal with hugs? Could we heal a hurt, the pain from a sarcastic word, loneliness, sadness, fear, anger, hate, despair, illnesses, and conflicts? Wouldnt you prefer to give a hug instead of responding with anger and rejection? How much conflict could you resolve by giving hugs? Maybe we cant heal all wounds with a hug, but it sure is a nice place to start. Go ahead; give yourself a hug each day. Your body will thank you for it. Hug a friend, parent, spouse, partner, neighbor, child or pet. Hug someone when you feel good and especially when you dont. Go ahead, give it a try. See how it feels. See how your hugs affect you and those who receive them. Go to my website to receive my gift to you, an EFT script and audio for peace in English or Spanish. Weight Loss Tips for the Weary

By Alan Kintel For many people dieting and more specifically keeping the weight lost off can be a nightmare, the reason for this is usually because many of the diets that people choose are too limited or the person doesnt change their lifestyle once the desired weight has been reached and falls back into their old routine. Here are some tips to help those that are feeling a little weary, stick to their diet and maintain their weight. Stick to an exercise routine Exercising not only plays an important role in helping you to lose weight but also in maintaining your weight once you have reached your desired goal. You should aim to exercise for at least 30 minutes everyday for 5 out of the 7 days of the week, however this doesnt have to all be done at once, the effects are still the same if you split this into 3 lots of 10 minutes of exercise per day. Finding a form of exercise that you particularly enjoy is essential if you are to stick with it in the long term; another option is joining a gym and working out with friends to give each other the encouragement when the going gets a little tough. Keep a food journal Keeping a written account of what you eat, when you eat and how many calories the meal was is a good way to make you more self-aware of conscious of what you eat and how it affects you. It can help you to realize the size of portions in relation to how many calories it contains and helps you to make the changes needed in the future to successfully keep the weight you have lost off for good. Join a support group Joining a support group such as weight watchers can often be a huge help for those struggling with their diet and needing support and encouragement, the beauty of groups such as these is that everyone is in the same boat. You are more likely to stick to a regime if you have support and the weekly meetings are an excellent way to get you going again and give you a much needed boost. Take a good look at yourself Very often we eat not because we are hungry but out of boredom, anxiety, loneliness or some similar emotion, emotional eating is common and very often we can do it without even realizing it. Take a good look at yourself and your eating habits particularly if you are eating between meals, this is usually the time when most people comfort eat. If you think your problem lies with emotional eating then take steps to alter your behavior by learning new behavioral skills. Portion size Be aware of the size of portions that you are eating, it is surprising how many calories are in meals, for example many fast food restaurants now offer super size meals and the calories content in these can be half or more of the total calorie count allowable for your day if you are on a calorie controlled diet. Psychiatrist Begin Training About Vagus Nerve Stimulation for Depression

By Charles Donovan The manufacturer of the vagus nerve stimulator has begun face-to face meetings with psychiatrists nationwide to educate them about vagus nerve stimulation therapy, how it works and for whom this treatment is indicated. It is very important that both you and your psychiatrist fully understand vagus nerve stimulation therapy so that you can make an informed decision together about this ninety-minute out-patient implant procedure. Three-hundred thirty representatives and case managers are participating in this nationwide education process. In addition to the face-to-face meetings with psychiatrists, the awareness and education process will include: Satellite Broadcast Event in 50 cities for 1,750 psychiatrists Fifty nationwide symposiums for 3,200 psychiatrists One-hundred Regional Symposiums for 2,000 psychiatrists Ninety teleconferences Continuing Medical Education Monograph (CME Credit)-7,000 psychiatrists Psychiatric Society Meetings Don’t get frustrated if your psychiatrist has not yet been informed or trained about vagus nerve stimulation. The results of the studies have been accepted for publication in prestigious peer reviewed journals such as Biological Psychiatry and Journal of Clinical Psychiatry. I know it has been a long, agonizing waiting game for you and your families. The most critical item has been completed; FDA approval of vagus nerve stimulation therapy as an adjunctive treatment for chronic depression. I attended a Conference about VNS Therapy last week. The speakers included the nation’s leading psychiatrists in treating the most severe depression. I will report on their very positive findings in my next article. Charles Donovan was a patient in the FDA investigational trial of vagus nerve stimulation as a treatment for chronic or recurrent treatment-resistant depression. He was implanted with the vagus nerve stimulator in April of 2001. He chronicles his journey from the grips of depression thanks to vagus nerve stimulation therapy in his book: Out of the Black Hole: The Patient’s Guide to Vagus Nerve Stimulation and Depression The book is availalable on Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble.com, 1-888-VAGUS-88 and on his web site. How to Lose Weight Without Dieting

By Chris Chenoweth Can you truly lose weight without counting calories? It sounds too good to be true, right? You CAN lose weight without dieting. There is no magic involved - just logical, sensible, easy steps anyone can follow. Most of us have tried dieting at one time or another, some of us more times than we can count. The main reason we cannot stick to diets is the feeling of deprivation that accompanies them. Cutting back drastically on food causes irritability, frustration and most times, constipation. Reducing calorie intake too severely results in a slower metabolism, causing your body to hold onto fat, making it that much more difficult to shed pounds. When you starve yourself, your body will trigger cravings for the nutrients it needs. These cravings will cause you to start bingeing on those foods that you have been avoiding. You then find yourself in a vicious cycle of starving and bingeing that is dangerous to your health and can lead to serious eating disorders. TIPS TO LOSE WEIGHT WITHOUT DIETING In reality, there are simple changes you can make in your daily lifestyle that will allow you to lose 1 to 2 pounds per week without counting calories. You will also be increasing your metabolism rate, improve your fitness level, and improve the quality of you and your familys life and health. Before you start incorporating these changes into your daily routine, make sure you DO NOT add to your current daily food intake. You may be tempted to increase your eating because you will be more active. If you do that, you will cancel out any weight loss efforts. *Drink lots of water. Strive for 8 glasses a day. Water flushes toxins out of your body and revs up your metabolism. *Eat a large nutritious breakfast. This will rev up your metabolism and make it easier for your body to burn fat. *Walk! Every day, take a walk, inside or outside, alone or with a friend or family member. Walk as briskly as you can and swing your arms. Breathe deeply. You will start to feel better almost immediately. Shoot for a mile a day. Try to increase it just a little each day. The more you walk, the easier it becomes and the more you will want to do it. *If you work in an office, use the stairs instead of the elevator. Park your car in the farthest parking space from the building. Get up and walk during your break instead of sitting down and eating a snack. *If you have access to an indoor swimming pool, use it several times a week. Swimming, along with walking, is an excellent aerobic exercise that gets your heart pumping and revs up your metabolism. *Go bicycling with your kids. Bicycling is another aerobic exercise that provides fun, relaxation and quality time with your family. Ride your bike to work! If you cannot bicycle outside, try a stationary bike. Watch TV or listen to music while you pedal. *Take up roller-skating (or ice-skating or roller-blading), another aerobic exercise that is so much fun! Bring your kids with you. *Take a fitness class, a Yoga class or take dancing lessons. All are fun and provide great exercise. *Take up a new hobby. Anything that will keep your hands busy and your mind off of eating such as crocheting, latch hook, knitting, working crossword puzzles or jigsaw puzzles, reading, etc. *Take up gardening; mow the grass, rake leaves, plant flowers, etc. *If you want to increase your weight loss, serve yourself smaller portions at mealtime. Eventually, you will need less in order to feel satisfied. As you can see, it IS possible to lose weight without counting calories. By following the tips listed above you will not only have more fun, you will be living a healthier lifestyle. Ringtone Guide - How to Load and Create New Monophonic Ringtones

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Craig_Thornburrow]Craig Thornburrow Long gone are the days when incoming calls were indicated only by mechanical bell ringing or annoying warbling electronic sounds. The portable cellular phones of today are essentially mini computers and they are able to utilize a portion of that processing power to generate interesting and attention grabbing ringtones. Cell phone ringtones have come a long way, and modern phones are capable of producing full spectrum digital sound. Monophonic ringtones were the first ringtone technology to be universally available on cellular phones. While more realistic cell phone audio technologies have recently become available, monophonic ringtones are still popular due to their relative simplicity and wide availability. This article will discuss several ways to load and create your own monophonic ringtones. Monophonic ringtones are simply sequences of individual notes played successively; only two values are required to completely specify the tone–the frequency (or pitch) and the duration. A number of simple languages have been developed to describe monophonic ringtones. Probably the most popular of the monophonic ringtones description languages is Ringing Tone Text Transfer Language (RTTTL) developed by Nokia. You can compose your own monophonic ringtones or download them for free or for a fee from the internet. Regardless of how you obtain your monophonic ringtones, they need to be loaded into your phone. There are three basic ways to load monophonic ringtones, though the exact method will vary by phone. Be sure to consult your phone’s documentation for the exact procedures. Some phones allow you to load tones using a data cable or infrared link. Some cell phones can load monophonic ringtones that are sent via Short Message Service (SMS) messaging. A simple but laborious way to load monophonic ringtones is to key them in directly if the phone features some sort of composer service. Monophonic ringtones are still popular despite their simplicity when compared with some of the other ringtone technologies available. Their ease of use and almost universal availability make monophonic ringtones a popular choice for many cellular phone users. Ringtones are available for download from a wide variety of online web sites and are typically free or, more usually, available for a small fee. Vilnius For Stag Weekends and Bachelor Weekends - Great Pre-Wedding Fun!

By Amalia Illgner When it comes to the perfect stag weekend, Prague is having its moment in the sun. For the better part of ten years the Czech capital has been the it girl of the former Eastern bloc. And just like it girls from Essex to Primrose Hill, Prague is being done like a dinner. Those who arent already going there are thinking of going there and everybody else already went in the 80s before, like, it became so popular. Now theres nothing wrong with abandoning Bournemouth and Skegness in favour of a bit of Iron curtain history and culture, in fact its where the smart money is. But listen up people, theres a whole map out there filled with quirky, exotic and down right crazy locations that are just champing at the bit to show you a good time. So lets start with the new kids on the Eastern Bloc; Riga, Vilnius, Tallinn and Moscow. Think of them as best friends youre yet to meet. Lovers youre yet to kiss, you get the drift. So here are some handy hints, interesting facts, useless trivia and some slap-your-granny-you-cant-be-serious exchange rates on places that you might want to consider upon organizing the mother of all stag weekends. Gentlemen, get your phrase books ready. VILNIUS S veiki atvyke Lietuvos! Welcome to Lithuania! Its the largest and most southerly of the three Baltic republics also home to an annual cucumber festival, pea beer and the worlds finest (and only) Soviet-era theme park. Here in Lithuania a beer bicycle is not just a fantasy but a legitimate form of transport and stewed beaver a perfectly reasonable alternative to toad in the hole. They ditched communism to score independence in 1991 and are now eating lunch in the EU with the cool kids. They walloped the 2001 Eurovision song contest with a princely 13th place and, as Paul McCartney would say, things just keep getting better all the time. The small and quirky republic of Lithuania, perched on the Baltic Sea and sandwiched between Poland, Belarus and Latvia, is simply one of the hottest travel destinations of the moment and making a stag weekend of Vilnius has never been so easy. So polish your Kankles, get in, get down and get ready to party Vilnius Style. Where its always 1991. Why in the name of sweet Monica Lewinsky* should I go to Vilnius for My Stag Weekend? What all those earnest Professor Boring travel guides wont tell you is that Vilnius is home to some of the best legal fun a man could ever want. And the best part is the hordes are yet to climb on the bandwagon so theres plenty of Lithuanian goodwill still in the barrel to go round. This is a good thing to keep in mind when planning the mother of all stag weekends. Now technically your wedding is supposed to be the best day of your life, but that doesnt mean that your stag weekend cant be the best weekend of your life. So, for the greatest weekend of your life Lithuanian style heres what you need to know: Its the Geographical Centre of Europe (Yes! Really!) Thanks to the nice people of the European Union extending their warm Belgian welcome to Lithuania, it is now officially part of Europe. And not content to simply be a part of the action, it also home to the European Geographical centre. I know. Its rather like paying twenty Euro for a chunk of cement said to have been part of the Berlin wall, little more than a tawdry marketing tool and barely worth the photo opportunity. But. Still. Youre drawn to the idea. Like one may be drawn to standing with your left arm in the Northern Hemisphere and the beer clenching right arm in the South, or going to Korea to moonwalk across the border of communism and capitalism.
