By Michael Temple Many dealers and auctioneers have been bringing container loads of antiques from Europe for years now. The lure of getting “fresh to the market” antique furniture and “smalls” is something that can bring renewed excitement back into your antique business. Buying antiques by the container load can be a mental “rush”, but is it the business builder some have made it out to be? Back in 1998, while I was still in the antique and estate auction and liquidation business, I decided to purchase a load of antique furniture and smalls and have the container shipped to my facility in New York State. Ill spare you the details of how exactly this is done during this article. I received the load buy tractor trailer, and had friends help me unload the container. It was packed full and tight, and the furniture was quite impressive to say the least! I was impressed by the high quality and good prices, and by the fact that I could have the load delivered right to my place of business. There were twist leg oak hall trees, high relief wardrobes, dining room suits, chairs, bureaus, desks, marble top stands, dressers and much, much more. And that was just the furniture! Inside the dressers and desks, there were smalls galore. Tucked inside one of the dressers was a hand-stitched sampler from 1861. The sampler was done by a mother who had lost a child at birth, and it achieved a high price at auction. I was most impressed with the condition and quantity of the smalls. I have been in touch with auctioneers and dealers who have had both good and bad experiences with buying antiques in Europe. I have noticed that without exception, the difference between a good experience and a bad one rested solely on who they actually did business with. Those that did business with the same company that I did business had a great experience. Those that didnt had a difficult experience. There are various companies that ship antiques from Europe, and you can find their sites all over the Internet. I have however come to realize that not all of these companies are equal! Some of them are very condescending, while others try to speak to the common folk while doing business. None of this has a bearing on your bottom line! There are a few things that you should look for when searching for an antique shipping company. Ill list them for you. 1. Per item price. Knowing your market is so vitally important to understanding whether or not you be profitable. Keep in mind that what is quoted from the company is never what the item actually costs. After you have paid ship transportation, duties, documentation fees, and trucking to your facility, the price per item goes up. 2. Reputation in your country. When the company is thousands of miles away, many of them will often tell you what you want to hear. Make sure that you have testimonials from people who have done business with them in your country! Call these people, talk with them about their experience, and tap their brains for more information about the company. Good shipping companies will always be willing to give you references from people that are satisfied with their services. 3. Company attitude. Keep in mind that you are offering to do business with them. Some antique shipping companies often come across as condescending and snobbish. Do not be afraid to ask questions, (even if they seem like stupid questions.) If they come across as rude or snooty, you may want to consider whether or not you wish to have a buying relationship with them. If shipping antiques from another country seems like something that you would like to explore do your homework! It can be a lucrative move, but it can also empty your account quickly if you dont know what you are doing. There are always more ways than one to do something! 2. Trial and Error One thing for you to remember when you get discouraged is that you actually tried in the first place. You made an effort! If you got a result that you didnt like, you will need to adjust your action based upon your result until you get a better outcome. Especially in the beginning of something, we feel overwhelmed at times and think that we will never get there. Yes, you may have temporary setbacks, but if you learn from those and change your actions you will get what you want. Colonel Sanders was rejected over 1000 times before someone bought his famous chicken recipe. The Wright brothers tried many times before taking flight. Thomas Edison tried to invent the light bulb over 9999 times. He said that every attempt showed him just another way how not to invent the electric lamp. He didnt look at it as mistakes, but as each trial as an advancement towards his ultimate goal. What a powerful mindset to have! The spirit of stick-to-it-iveness (in proper English the word is tenacity) is the one that wins! Each time you try again, you WIN! 3. Questions are the answer! When you run out of ideas its time to start asking questions. Who do you ask the questions? Guess what, its YOU! Thats right, you have to start asking yourself the questions and you WILL come up with more answers. The trick is to ask yourself better questions so that you will get better answers! What do I mean by that? OK, let me give you an example and lets use the scenario from above about Mike and his math test. Now he could ask himself, How come I never get a good mark? How come I cant do well in school? The kicker is that when you ask those kinds of unhelpful questions you are going to come up with answers that are just as unhelpful like Because I am stupid, because Ill never learn it, because I am no good, etc. Now let me ask you some questions: Are those answers going to help you? How are they going to make you feel? Are they going to make you take action and try again? Here is a better way of asking yourself questions: What can I try differently next time to help me study? Ask questions that are geared towards getting what you want, not what you dont want. Keep the questions positive! For extra effectiveness, try writing the question(s) down. Ask yourself the questions before you go to sleep at night and often times the answers will come the next day as your brain had time to think about it while you were sleeping! Sounds pretty easy, doesnt it? Keep asking better questions and better answers will come! 4. Guidance Here is another question. Who can help you? Is there somebody that has already achieved the same goal? Find them and ask them what they did to get there. Asking doesnt cost anything. If they wont help you, find somebody else! And guess what, chances are these people werent always doing great at first. The difference is that they kept going however small the action seemed at the time. Once you have the determination to persist until you get what you want, you will become more confident in yourself as well. 5. Excuse me! A sure way to keep you from starting or even continuing towards your goal is to come up with an excuse. Lets face it; there is always an excuse ready for you to use if you so choose. Its easy to come up with excuses. If you find yourself making excuses take a minute and you will see that you are really just cheating yourself! 6. Picture it! I know that to make your goals a reality it most likely requires you to venture outside of your comfort zone. That can be scary and not feel very uncomfortable at first! Keep focusing on the benefit of your goal to push yourself further along. Take a minute whenever you feel overwhelmed and DREAM about your goal! See yourself already being there. Get a really clear picture of what you are going to look like, where you will be, and even what you will be feeling like! Its fun to dream and it will help make your dream come true! You deserve the best in life! You deserve to get what you are dreaming about and you alone can make it happen! Its your birthright to have it all! Nobody has the right to take that from you no matter what you have been told! Stay in the game. Dont give up. Dont quit. Dont succumb to pressure. You may need to take a breather every once in while to help you get back your momentum and thats OK just as long as you get back in the game again. Any dream worth having is worth persevering for! I borrowed a name for the four from the old mustard colored tract made so famous by Bill Brights organization, Campus Crusade for Christ. I call them The Four Spiritual Laws of Dating. Although they are pointed at Christians in general I am sure they would work for anyone. I suppose to work on just anyone it might require that the reader first read the original Four Spiritual Laws tract, and believe it. 1. Keep All The Rules of The Scripture. There are quite a few laws and rules set forth in the scripture about dating. Keep them all. Examples are, not having sex before marriage, not being unequally yoked to unbelievers and the study of the principles and examples of a good marriage as set forth in the Bible. If you dont know what these things are then you should be reading your Bible and seeking a Pastor or good Christian counselor to help you. 2. Pray About Every Aspect of Your Dating and Your Intention To Marry. This is not simple or rudimentary advice it is absolute bottom line essential advice. Miss this and you have missed the boat. Pray about your potential mate, pray with them and pray together with others as well. God is always honored when we include him in all our intentions and decision. To leave him out of such a major decision (marriage) is ridiculous and could only be insulting to God. Remember he is not just Jesus, he is the Lord Jesus. 3. Take Your Time. Take time to look to listen to weigh your choice, thus giving God time to answer you back as you go. 4. Ask Your Prospective Mate this All Important Question. I wasnt lucky enough to have heard this advice when I was a young man. I would have given a kingdom to acquire it and I have never seen it fail anyone in many decades of telling it to others. I originated this test but I must say I was always sure it was God inspired. You must pose the question within specific parameters for it to work. First you must be sure that you tell your mate that this is a question that they might ask themselves if they were in a comfortable place where they go to sit and meditate or pray. You are not asking the question, they are asking it of themselves. No one accept the insane and fools would ever lie or try to deceive themselves. You would ask them, if they were alone in a comfortable place, a place they liked to be in to think and pray, and if they were to ask themselves one single question, what would their answer be, to themselves? The question is. If I could summarize in three sentences or less what I want out of life, what would my answer be to myself. Let them ponder this question, dont rush the answer but take their answer with utmost seriousness. People will rarely lie to themselves and the answer will be the truth almost without fail. If they say I just want to love and be loved, or I just want some security in life, or I want to get the best things in life or follow a careerthose are the real and lasting answers, you can count on it. If you should not marry that person but were to come around to see them for a period of one or two or fifty years you would see one thing, they would have found the things they told you they wanted or they would still be looking for them. What has all this got to do with anything? Only everything! By posing the question as outlined with an honest person you will have boiled the forty gallons of sap it takes to make a quart of grade A maple syrup. You can believe the answer; you can also be guided by the answer. That is, you can decide if the answer conjuncts with your own answer to yourself about your own life. Comparing all of the common likes and dislikes you have with your prospective mate or having long intimate discussions is a good thing. But life is in motion; everyone has a direction real or perceived. Find out what that direction is before marriage and you will not crash against it after you are married.
